Content sizes continue to grow due to rich media like audio recordings, video recordings, large data and/or logging files, videos with transcriptions, documents with many pages including images and embedded content. An idea for IBM FileNet Content Manager is to provide an administrative configuration which allows at a Class or Object Store level handling of large files during ingestion or download to split into multi content elements OR merge into a signel file.
For upload/ingestion, something like if a file is greater than X, then split the file into sequential files of X size or less as content elements of the document. X being a configurable variable, so a real world example say a 1.5GB file were being uploaded, once detected that the file is > than X (if x set to 200MB), start to split the upload stream of data into new content elements, like element 0 = first 200MB, element 1 = second 200MB, element 2 = third 200MB, element 3 = fourth 200MB, element 4 = fifth 200MB, element 5 = next 200MB, element 6 = next 200MB, element 7 = remaining 100MB. Update an attribute/property of the document object that it is a multi-part split file in nature and its split size (200MB). An extra feature on top of this could be to allow for clients to add content in this manner directly, in parallel to a document object (pre-split files by client as multi elements to same document) spreading the upload over multiple threads. This extra feature it would be the responsibility of the client app to correctly upload segments in first to last element number order for correct reassembly.
For download/export, provide an option to merge files where the attribute/property of the document states it's a multi-part split file, in parallel retrieve the content elements from storage to a local temp/cache local file system location then stitch back together the files into the big file, then download from cache to client/user. Today clients are able to download multiple content elements of a document from CPE in different download requests, if they wished to reassemble a file themselves.
