We have observed, within a site that if multiple sweeps are running and restarts of JVMs happen during sweep processing, all running sweeps can potentially realign to the first active JVM post restart and therefore overload the JVM/Server. In cases where you cannot site isolate the sweep traffic, ideally there should either be one of the following options:
1) At the virtual server instance (aka JVM) level, allow configuration of a Max Number of Concurrent Sweeps Allowed. It could be a default like 5, but should be configurable. This limit should help to spread workload over multiple virtual server instances within a site, like if 20 concurrent sweeps are running, and there are 5 virtual server instances with sweep subsystem enabled within a site, this config could be set to a maximum of 4 concurrent sweeps per virtual instance. During a restart, the first jvm would only take 4 sweeps max, the next jvm would take 4 sweeps max, and so on such that the 20 sweeps distribute evenly across the 5 virtual server instances.
2) Allow an affinity between sweep and virtual server instance, in this case at the sweep job or policy level, have a Virtual Server Instance Worker property, if empty first come first serve OR allow for selection from list or from Object Reference or some Pattern for Naming the virtual server(s) that will perform the job or policy. In this way you can define during setup of sweep what virtual instance should perform the work. If the virtual server instance is not available, throw an error and/or revert to first come first serve after so many retries to use the named virtual server instance.
