Import WAL scripts into RPA Studio

At the moment, RPA Studio does not allow users to import scripts that are not stored in a file not formatted as a wal file. As for now, I can paste code that I have in an external file into a new one that I create in RPA Studio. Once the code is in the new file, RPA Studio already tries to interpret it.

I think this feature would be a nice addition for several reasons:

  • Promotes a standard way of developing RPAs in a company;

  • Time-saving approach;

  • Reduction of human errors;

  • Reusability of code;

That is why I think that an API to allow the importing of scripts that were created outside RPA Studio could be an interesting feature to add in futures versions of the software.

    Thank you for the detailed explanation.

    So you're requesting the ability to create valid WAL files outside of the Studio authoring tool, right? Since the WAL file is a binary file (not plain text), you cannot do this today because you are not able to save the file in the format Studio understands.

    My idea is a bit more advanced than reusing scripts.

    WAL files are just files, indeed, but they have a limitation, which is that they HAVE to be created within Studio because when you save a WAL file an encryption step is added to the instructions contained within the file.

    So, as long as you want to work with ONLY WAL files, you will not have problems and everything will work.

    However, this scenario limits a lot the possibility to exploit IBM RPA. Let me give you an example: what if I could create RPA instructions on the fly based on some inputs given by a user?
    For instance, consider that I receive from an user a set of actions that belong to a task and the final goal is to automate such task.

    Now, let's imagine I also have an algorithm to interpret these actions and translate them in IBM RPA instructions. Because I have no way to properly encript such instructions, the file will not be read correctly from IBM RPA Studio, as it is not a valid WAL file. However, the problem here are not the instructions themselves, but only the way in which they are encripted.

    Nevertheless, I could save the instructions in a different file format, like .txt.

    IF IBM RPA Studio could import such format, then the encryption would not be required anymore.

    WAL scripts are just files. You can open any WAL files in Studio. You can also reuse WAL scripts in other scripts by leveraging the executeScript command.

    What do you mean by "importing" them?
