PFS support for new releases of ElasticSearch

Process Federation Server (PFS) supports an externalized Elastic Search service at version 6.x of ES. Internally PFS uses the Elasticsearch Java High Level REST Client 6.1.4, and the Elasticsearch doc states that it supports interacting with 6.1, 6.2 and any later 6.x version of Elasticsearch clusters. Thus there is not support for Elasticsearch versions 7 or future versions.

Yet version 6.8 is technically end of life as of December 2020, to be supported thereafter only until version 8 is available. In general Elastic practice is for support of major release versions for 18 months from GA. So the expectation will be for additional major version releases in the future, beyond versions 7 and 8.

To receive benefit of new features, capabilities, tools and improvements in Elasticsearch, there's a need for continuous support for the new releases in PFS. Gaining the advantages of those improvements would be a key motivation for anyone implementing an Elasticsearch service externalized from the PFS runtime. And such currency may be an enterprise requirement for support of the service by teams external to the BAW/DBA core team.
