Offer more Customization Options for IBM Workplace

Currently, customizing IBM Workplace is not supported, which stands in contrast to the flexibility previously available in IBM Process Portal. At the moment, the only supported option is to build a completely standalone work portal using the four views provided in the Workplace Toolkit. However, many customers do not want to create an entirely new portal; instead, they want the ability to refine and adapt the existing Workplace, similar to what was possible with Process Portal.

Although limited changes can be achieved through various workarounds (see this discussion in the TechXchange Community), relying on unsupported methods should not be the primary path for essential customizations.

Necessary changes that customers require for IBM Workplace:

  • Hide the description for Processes and Startable Services in the Launch Modal.
  • Changing the title of IBM Workplace in the header bar
  • Changing the color of the header bar to align with corporate branding
  • Changing the url of the help icon link to a customer specific site
  • Enabling a way for users to differentiate between Processes and Startable Services in the Launch Modal. Currently this cannot be achieved. Additionally the information, which Process App the item belongs to, is not shown, which is different to the Process Portal behaviour
  • Hiding the statistics information. For many customers this information should not be displayed to every user

If IBM would include those options plus additional customizations, then the adoption of IBM Workplace would be much significantly stronger at customers. The ability to tailor the experience to corporate branding, usability needs, and governance expectations remains a important requirement for many deployments.

We should ask: what experience is expected when customizing Workplace?  To me, the simplest and expected way is:
    - Copy the Workplace Process App
    - Start customizing by changing the configuration options and bindings of view instances

Since there is quite a bit of nesting, it is often necessary to copy over composites to adjust configuration options.  We could do a few things to ease this pain:
        1) Have new editor actions to copy views from toolkits into current project and replace references.
        2) Workplace could be constructed with fewer composites.
        3) Workplace could "promote" configuration options that are likely to be required.
