We need a password type for environmental variables

We would like a password type that obfuscates the password value for environmental variables. We have several services that we call with basic auth with a system user. Developers are not allowed to know production passwords. This means that we have to set up a remote session to have our security personnel enter the passwords every time we set up a new service that our system user will call. If we have a password type for environmental variables, we could have them enter the password just once as an obfuscated password and then reference it by the variable. It would save our time as well as the time of our security personnel.
