Digital Business Automation Ideas

This is an IBM Automation portal for Digital Business Automation products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Please use the following category to raise ideas for these offerings for all environments (traditional on premises, containers, on cloud):

More attach points on gateways

Want more attach points on the gateway. Currently only have 4, with at least one used for the input.

    Thanks for the example!

Accepting the request, pending further design thought. The gateway node (size and shape) doesn't easily lend itself to many connection points, and so this will be a design challenge. We'll update this RFE when we have more information to share.

In the meantime, here are a few recommendations and best-practices:
    - Avoid combing incoming and outgoing connections at the same point. In your sample, the bottom point on the gateway appears to have a combination of incoming and outgoing connections, making them difficult to distinguish. Instead, designate specific points, for example, the top and right points for outgoing connections, and specific points for incoming connections.
    - Activities allow many connection points, and so you can fully leverage those to ensure your connections are clearly visible. In your sample, the green activity to the immediate left of the gateway could be reconfigured so the connections are distinctly visible.
    - Leverage the "Align Parallel Flows" feature. It can do magical things for diagrams with many gateways.
    - Leverage the Relaxed Layout feature for finer-grained control of your activities and gateways relative to each other, often leading to clearer and more readable diagrams.

Attachment (Description): Here is an example of a flow that has more input / outputs than there are points on the decision. For more complex diagrams that we create the "Align Parallel Flows" doesn't always work and make it easier to follow.

Thanks for your request! How many outputs do you average on your gateways? And can you provide a few examples of processes where it's difficult to follow where the lines go? Even when lines originate from the same point on the gateway, they will each end up at different end points and so the lines will diverge and eventually become distinct. If we could see some examples, that would help us visualize the problem better.

Finally, there are a few diagram layout options that you might find useful. (1) Right-click on the gateway and select "Align Parallel Flows". This often results in a more readable layout for the gateway, its lines, and the activities following it.
