Support JDK 17 with BAMOE 8

Please find the business rationale for “BAM OE v.8.x support for JDK 17 request” as follows.

Introduction:

We have several critical applications running on IBM BAMOE v8.x. Unfortunately, IBM BAMOE v8 only officially supports OpenJDK versions 8 and 11, which presents a challenge given our standardization on OpenJDK 17 across our enterprise environment. We do have plans to migrate from IBM BAMOE v8.x to v9.x, but until the migration is complete, it is essential to ensure that our applications run in a risk-free environment

Business Use Case:

We have standardized on OpenJDK 17 across our enterprise environment for the following reasons:

  • Enhanced security features and longer support lifecycle
  • Improved performance metrics critical to our financial applications
  • Alignment with our enterprise-wide technology standards and security policies
  • Reduced technical debt through standardized runtime environments

Current Challenge:

While we understand IBM BAMOE v8 officially supports OpenJDK 8 and 11, our organization cannot implement these older versions due to:

  • Security policy requirements mandating OpenJDK 17
  • Compliance obligations requiring consistent technology standards
  • Operational risks of maintaining multiple Java runtime environments

Request:

We request IBM to develop and provide a compatibility patch enabling BAMOE v8 to function properly with OpenJDK 17. This would:

  • Maintain compliance with our internal security standards
  • Potentially benefit other enterprise customers facing similar standardization requirements

If we proceed with OpenJDK 8 or 11 to support BAMOE v8, we will have no choice but to raise a formal risk ticket internally and flag IBM BAMOE v8 as a potential security and compliance risk.
