Native High Availability and State Synchronization for Business Central Controllers

Business Central provides essential administrative capabilities for managing KIE Servers, including container deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management.

However, in managed environments, KIE Servers depend on controller availability during startup and recovery. Although running KIE Servers can continue processing workloads when Business Central becomes unavailable, restarting or recovering instances may fail if no controller is accessible.

Deploying multiple Business Central instances can address controller availability, but introduces another challenge: maintaining consistent deployment configurations across controllers. If synchronization fails, KIE Servers may receive different container configurations depending on which controller they connect to, potentially causing inconsistent deployment states.

We propose introducing a native, officially supported High Availability mechanism for Business Central controllers, providing:

  • Reliable state synchronization of KIE Server templates, container configurations, and deployment definitions.
  • Consistent deployment operations across controller instances, preventing configuration divergence.
  • Automatic failover and recovery, allowing KIE Servers to reconnect to another available controller without inconsistent deployment states.
  • Automatic state reconciliation when a controller recovers from failure.
  • Preservation of Business Central administrative capabilities, without requiring standalone or headless controllers.

This enhancement would improve the resilience of enterprise BPM environments, reduce operational risks, and eliminate the need for custom synchronization and failover mechanisms.

A documented and officially supported HA architecture would be particularly valuable for organizations operating business-critical workloads.
