Spring Boot 4.1 Support in IBM BAMOE

Our organization is aligning with the enterprise technology modernization roadmap, which mandates adoption of the latest supported Spring ecosystem versions for security, supportability, and long-term maintenance. Currently, IBM BAMOE 9.5 supports Spring Boot 4.0.x, which prevents us from moving to Spring Boot 4.1.

Key Reasons for Supporting Spring Boot 4.1

Enterprise Standardization

  • Our organization has standardized on Spring Boot 4.1 for all new application development and platform upgrades.
  • Lack of BAMOE compatibility creates exceptions within the technology landscape and increases operational complexity.

Security and Compliance

  • Enterprise vulnerability management programs require adoption of newer framework versions as they become organizational standards.
  • Delayed support forces applications to remain on older dependency stacks, increasing compliance and security review overhead.

Dependency Alignment

  • Current BAMOE applications contain dependency mismatches because BAMOE is locked to the Spring Boot 4.0.x ecosystem.
  • The identified 38 unmatched dependencies are largely part of the IBM BAMOE-managed stack, including:
    • Kogito
    • Drools
    • KIE
    • Efesto
  • Additional BOM-managed transitive dependencies such as Tomcat, Hibernate, Netty, Vert.x, Spring Security, Spring Data, Micrometer, and Flyway also require BOM-level alignment.
  • Support for Spring Boot 4.1 would enable dependency ecosystem alignment and reduce version management complexity.

Cloud Platform Compatibility

  • Spring Boot 4.1 requires newer Spring Cloud versions.
  • Current BAMOE compatibility constraints prevent adoption of supported Spring Cloud releases and create challenges in maintaining consistency across cloud-native applications.

Reduced Technical Debt

  • Maintaining separate framework versions for BAMOE-based applications introduces additional testing, validation, and maintenance efforts.
  • Supporting Spring Boot 4.1 would reduce technical debt and simplify application lifecycle management.

Future-Proofing Investments

  • Organizations investing in BAMOE require alignment with the broader Spring ecosystem roadmap.
  • Early support for newer Spring Boot versions enables faster adoption of platform innovations and minimizes future upgrade risks.

Current Impact

When attempting to upgrade to Spring Boot 4.1, the application fails to start due to incompatibilities between BAMOE 9.5 and the Spring Boot 4.1/Spring Cloud dependency ecosystem, forcing a downgrade to Spring Boot 4.0.7. As a result, our organization is unable to fully align BAMOE applications with the enterprise-approved technology stack.

Request: Please consider adding Spring Boot 4.1 compatibility to a future BAMOE release to enable enterprise standardization, dependency alignment, security compliance, and modernization initiatives.
